As Told Over Brunch

As Told Over Idle Hands Bread Company's Breakfast Sandwich

I first heard about Idle Hands Bread Company months ago via a friend who lives right around the corner from the bakery on Strawberry Street. I have to hand it to Idle Hands, they have great branding. Each of their pastries comes in a brown paper bag with their logo, which includes two hands shaking on it. My friend snapped me this very bag multiple mornings in a row with the caption: "The best!" "So delicious!" "AMAZING!"

This is an everything croissant from Idle Hands, which is not the focus of the post - but has cream cheese inside, which is an exciting surprise!

Idle Hands' pastry case!

I don’t remember the exact first time I visited, but I decided I had to try this place out. It’s styled like a café that just opened and may still be renovating with chalkboard menus, a few seats by a sidewalk window that reads “BOULANGERIE,” and a display case full of croissants and Danishes. Don’t worry, I don’t have a sweet tooth always; they also have some savory treats like the bacon and cheddar croissant ($4.25).

Now this is a brunch blog. Idle Hands is a bakery. Their biggest business is probably the loaves of bread they sell. I don’t know what Epps bread is, but it’s good (according to our friends at Let’s Share a Dish, it’s a country blonde bread styled with the help of a friend named Epps). I don’t know that Epps bread is good because I bought a loaf (I probably should). I know this because I had a life-changing breakfast sandwich at Idle Hands, and I need everyone to hear about it.

The holy breakfast sandwich.

At some point, I noticed a little note above their pastry case that said, “Breakfast sandwiches available.” It took me many weeks until I remembered this footnote and ordered one. The sandwich comes on toasted Epps bread with scrambled eggs, the option of bacon or sausage, and cheddar. Gosh, you can’t have a breakfast sandwich without cheese. Get outta here!

No, you get outta here because this sandwich is… like I said, I’m catching my breath, but holy. Cow.

And it’s only $5!

It’s greasy, but not too greasy. The amount of eggs is not stingy, but it’s also not overwhelming so they’re falling off the bread. And the cheese… you just can never go wrong with cheese. And I highly recommend including the bacon. This is coming from someone who is not a declared bacon aficionado. However, I have heard from my vegetarian friend that the sandwich is similarly delicious minus the pork.

This sandwich is only served through 2 PM, but daily. Except Mondays. Idle Hands is closed on Mondays, which can be devastating depending on what you wake up craving. And I wake up craving this sandwich.

But I have visited Idle Hands at 2:20 PM on a Sunday afternoon to be told they’ve run out of the sandwich-making supplies.

Unacceptable.

But also unacceptable that I would roll in after 2 PM.

So, the next time you’re near Strawberry Street and it’s before 2 PM, you should drop in and order the breakfast sandwich. You will not be disappointed.

The breakfast sandwich from the inside! Are you sold yet?

The lattes at Idle Hands are also something I recommend.
