Brunch Review: District 5

To celebrate the start of November -- eek, can we talk about how it's November already!? -- we decided to give District 5 a try for brunch based off of ours Uber driver's recommendation last night. Upon waking up, I dug up their menu to find that they offered nothing but a brunch buffet and a few pizzas. 

My first critique of the brunch is about their menu. It's really difficult, if not impossible, to see the menu well on mobile. But we went anyway, because this isn't my first brunch buffet, and I was sold already on the promise of endless eggs.

We arrived to a full, but not crowded restaurant and were able to get a table immediately. Our waiter picked up on the fact that perhaps we were a little tired from the previous night and asked us, "Who wants tequila shots!?"

The answer was a resounding "No," but it did get us in a livelier mood. I ordered the brunch buffet and went to town. When you first approach the buffet, there is a man standing there ready to make you a custom omelet (and also give you more information about what in the hell a Spanish omelet is). I loaded up my plate with all the brown food I could fit: French toast strudel, hash browns, corned beef hash, fried chicken, and a biscuit with sausage and gravy.

While the phrase, "I really need to eat better now that I'm back from my trip," has left my mouth about a dozen times a day since getting back to the states, today clearly wasn't the day that was going to happen either.

Here's a rapid fire review of the food I consumed:

  • Sausage: Tasted like a sausage. It wasn't as good as the sausage I ate in Berlin, but it definitely didn't suck.
  • Spanish omelet: I had no idea what this was, but went for it anyway. It's like a block of hash browns held together with eggs. I was intrigued, but wished there was some meat shoved in there too.
  • Fried chicken: The breading was really delicious, and the meat was tender. I liked it with a bit of Sriracha and ketchup.
  • French toast strudel: OH MY GOSH! You'll see in my second plate it made a repeat. It's like bread pudding almost with a crispy top of sugar. Really lush addition to the plate.
  • Hash browns and corned beef hash: I sort of ate them at the same time, and they were both great. One was super cheesy, and the other had meat bits in it.
  • Sausage gravy and biscuit: Ever since I was a young northern child, I have had a fascination with sausage gravy. And these live up to my expectations. 

Once I finished my first plate, I took a breather, considered unbuttoning my pants, and then went for round two. This time I focused on green, plus a brownie. The brownie was dense with an odd fruity hint. It was my far my least favorite buffet item. 

To sum it up: for $15, I did feel a bit of pressure to eat a lot of food, but it's reminiscent of a wedding buffet in quality. Plus, they have a DJ during brunch, which is both bizarre and awesome.
