Brunch Review And Recipe: Homemade Breakfast Pizza

Disclaimer: I helped (or more like “helped”) make this brunch, so this by no means will be an unbiased review. It will be totally biased.

I am a big fan of pizza of any kind: buffalo chicken pizza, pizza bites, pizza bagel, cauliflower pizza, thin crust pizza, thick crust pizza, I could go on. So when I was propositioned to buy some supplies for breakfast pizza in return for a full assembly of said pizza, I was immediately sold. The shopping list was easy:

Ingredients for Breakfast Pizza

  • 2 packages crescent rolls
  • 1 Jimmy Dean sausage log
  • 1 packet of country gravy mix
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups of milk (to make the gravy, so check the package to make sure you get the right amount)
  • 1 bag of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 bag of shredded Jack cheese
  • Dash of salt and pepper
  • Butter to grease things
  • Fresh garlic or garlic powder

I traded a slice of the future pizza for some milk from Cazey and already had the salt, pepper, and butter, so my list was getting shorter. Plus, you aren’t going to use all the bags of cheese, which is something to look forward to having on hand after.

Directions to Make Breakfast Pizza

Step one: find someone to cook for you. Check.

Step two: assign yourself the easy jobs. Check.

  1. My job was to tinfoil the pizza pan, grease the foil, and then smooth out all the crescents to make the pizza dough. The most challenging part of this is that you need to make sure all the pieces combine so it doesn’t easily rip apart.
  2. While I was working on the pizza dough, have your chef browning the sausage according to the package and making the gravy according to the package. Separately, of course. The sausage is cooked in a pan and the gravy in a saucepan. Once they are both done, you can then combine them.
  3. Once you're done flattening out the crescents, cook the base at 375 degrees for 13 minutes. We poked some holes in it to deflate it a bit since it was getting kind of fluffy.
  4. While that’s cooking, whisk the eggs, a bit of milk, salt and pepper in a bowl. Then scramble them on the stovetop. By this time, the crust is probably done, and you’re in the home-stretch of this recipe.
  5. Spread the sausage gravy mix on top of the crust (think: pizza sauce). Then spread a layer of cheese over the gravy (think: this layer is the same as a real pizza). Then spread the eggs evenly over the cheese (think: topping). And then for good measure, throw more cheese on top.
  6. You’re not done yet. Melt some butter and garlic in the microwave. Then take a spoon and drizzle it on the crust. It may not seem terribly breakfast-y, but it tastes like heaven. Cook a few more minutes until all the cheese is melted and your pizza is about ready to eat! Once it comes out, let it sit for a few minutes – or seconds, depending how long you can hold off – and serve.

Breakfast Pizza Review

The pizza was really delicious! The pro and the con of the crescent roll crust was that it was delicious and buttery (pro), but rather weak in structure (con).

The toppings were rather heavy with quite a bit of sodium, but was definitely a taste sensation.

What’s really cool about this breakfast pizza recipe is how filling it is. I ate one piece and was full. Then I ate one for dinner and was full. Same for lunch the following day. It's almost upsetting how filling it is because then you only get to eat one slice at a time. And when you're averaging one slice a meal, one pizza goes a very, veeeeeery long way.
