Who's on first?...Yes...I mean the fellow on first?...Who.

That is my first impression of Lunch. I told people we were going to Lunch, and then we went in circles until everyone finally figured out that we were in fact going to brunch at a place named Lunch.

Confusion -- and a major hangover -- aside, the trip to Lunch for brunch was excellent. First off, who knew such a quaint and delicious haven was so close to my house? I didn't. We got there at the perfect time, with one table left right in the center of the restaurant for us.

The restaurant itself was tiny, but perfect. There was a big pig made of license plates above us, with a little bar to the left and just a few tables circling us. What a great, central location for someone who thought their head was exploding. Anyways, the waitress was great and kept my adorable mason jar of water full at (almost) all times.

A few weekends ago, one of my old roommates and I were thinking about where to go for brunch. ‘Tis the season of Richmond Brunch Weekend, so I sent her the list of fifty — yes that’s 50— options we had (I like to eat at participating restaurants and scope them out beforehand so I can make more informed recommendations).

From there, we narrowed it down to places I hadn’t been before, were open on Saturdays and were close by. We landed on Bar Solita, the newest RVA Hospitality restaurant featuring Mediterranean vibes, tapas and pizza. Bar Solita’s brunch menu reflects all of that, featuring a little bit of everything. When I was perusing the menu the night before our visit, I had my eye on the Old Bay chicken biscuit, breakfast empanadas and chicken and crepes. We decided to make a reservation in case it was crowded, which it wasn’t.

Enough was enough, and we decided that we can’t reside this close to Metro and not give their brunch a shot. So last week, Cazey ran the Monument 10K – through the cold and flurries – while I slept. After running over six miles, Cazey wanted some food. I woke up hungry and was semi-ready-to-go by the time Cazey got back. He quickly got ready, and we sent on our journey to Metro, both with empty stomachs, ready to be filled.

When we entered, it wasn’t terribly crowded. We grabbed the middle booth and were promptly given a dainty glass of water each and the menus. We quickly downed our water, and discussed what we wanted to get. I narrowed it down to the breakfast burrito, southern bennie or the chicken and waffles. I never made a decision, as I knew I wanted to let the waiter pick what would be best.

Cazey settled on the big breakfast, to which I promptly talked him out of, because reviews are lame if you order the most basic thing on the menu. With that gentle (or maybe it wasn’t gentle) nudge, he decided on the smoked salmon omelet.

One of my favorite dad jokes is to walk into an empty restaurant, turn to a friend and say, “Like how I rented it out for you?”

No one ever laughs, so I keep saying it, waiting for it to land. FINALLY my friend chuckled when I said it as we walked into Perch for brunch this Sunday. We considered making reservations, but since we showed up at 10:03 a.m. and the place opens at 10 a.m., we thought we’d be safe.

And that we were.

My parents came down to Richmond and wanted either nachos or chicken for dinner, so I narrowed down our options to Billy Jack’s, Hot Chick, Continental Westhampton or Weezies. We ended up going to Continental Westhampton, but I couldn’t get over the menu and the gut feeling I had that Hot Chick would be a place for me.

The next day, my boyfriend texted me and told me we should brunch at Hot Chick — which is why we’re together clearly — and we made plans for the next weekend. I read and reread the menu at least once a day until it was finally Sunday.

If you read this blog often or follow us on Instagram, you likely know that one of Cazey’s favorite brunch spots in Richmond was Star-Lite, so when we found out it was closing, we immediately made plans to go to their final brunch service to say our goodbyes.

You know what they say, though, when one door shuts, another door opens.

And that door happens to be to Brunch, the latest companion restaurant to Lunch | Supper.

One thing I didn't want to wait for was The Bayside Skillet. I have a thing for kitschy (which means tacky but in an ironic or intended way). My kitchen is kitschy, and this restaurant reminded me of what my kitchen would be if I lived on the beach and cooked omelets and crepes. And when I say 'remind,' I mean pretty loosely. My kitchen is all about yellow with hits of bright colors, and theirs was pink with accents of strawberries.

However, as I alluded to already, the brunch at Hen Quarter was magnificent. From the service to the atmosphere to the drinks to the food, I'd rate it a 5 out of 5 on everything. I had high expectations heading into Hattie Mae's.

My mom, my favorite mom on the planet, suggested we try it out after hearing about Hen Quarter. So, at 10:05AM last Sunday, we went to Hattie Mae's. Like we were when we went to On the Rox, we were the first table sat.

Brunching Gluten-Free in RVA
