Brunch Review: Galaxy Diner

I discovered Galaxy Diner many years in a galaxy just a short distance away ago aka the first month I moved to Richmond. My roommate at the time took me and a couple of her friends after a VMFA happy hour. And I'll be honest, I've never been to Galaxy for anything but dinner. But it's breakfast food all day, so you could feasibly brunch here. And breakfast for dinner is second best to brunch. Actually, maybe better because you can breakfast for dinner on weekdays, too.

Anyway, I feel compelled to write a review for Galaxy and let those that don't know about this galaxy that's much closer than a galaxy far, far away. Galaxy is situated about halfway through Carytown, between Greek on Cary and Carytown Cupcakes. It has sliding glass doors, but you have to press the button for them to slide open, which is genius, or else they'd be sliding open every second for every Carytown passerby.

The place is decorated like a throwback diner (imagine that), complete with vintage film posters that feature aliens. I'm actually not sure if the posters are for real alien flicks or not.

Since the fall, my Facebook feed has been spotted with friends’ Instagrams featuring trendy cocktails and aerial shots of flowers and/or food (warning: aerial shot ahead), all tagged at the Quirk Hotel. This past weekend I finally got to see the Quirk Hotel myself when I brunched at Maple and Pine, Quirk’s onsite restaurant and a participating restaurant in Richmond Brunch Weekend.

I feel not a lot of people know that Maple and Pine is the name of Quirk’s restaurant, or maybe I just need to namedrop Quirk Hotel, so every time I explained where I brunched, I go, “At Maple and Pine of Quirk Hotel.” Duh.

Quirk opened in downtown Richmond this past fall. It’s part of a hotel chain called Destination Hotels. So it’s not exactly a chain like the Marriott. It’s hard to really pin down what Quirk is, because it’s definitely more than a hotel: it’s a gallery, a restaurant, a bar, an event space, etc., etc. Its name should be “Trendy, Etc.,” to be honest because of how millennials on social media treat it.

Cazey and I have been meeting some really cool Richmonders in the quest to make Richmond Brunch Weekend as amazing as it can be. Today, we got to sit down with Faith Wilkerson from UnlockingRVA to chat about how we can share resources to get more restaurants onboard and more people to know about the event. We decided to conduct our "business" in the only fashion we know: over brunch.

Despite the weather being a bit gloomy, we decided to try out The Boathouse at Rockett's Landing. Since I never go into a brunch cold, I previewed the menu the night before and decided that I was going to get the Southern custard bread pudding French toast.

When you first walk in to brunch at Boathouse at Rockett's Landing, the first and most noticeable change from their nighttime set-up is the wide array of breakfast foods laid out for the taking in the semi-buffet set up by the far windows.

My friend Joanna and I grab coffee or lunch about every other week. Joanna usually grabs food at a cart while I pack lunch like the frugal grad student I am. (She’s also in grad school. Maybe I’m just frugal.) Recently, however, the wind chill was a bit too much, so Joanna suggested we go to Citizen.

This wasn’t my first time at Citizen, but it was at their new location on East Main and 12th. Their old location was this small joint underneath what can only be described as a plaza on the side of a skyscraper (okay, it’s Richmond, so the SunTrust Tower is a skyscraper). Honestly, finding the old place made me feel like such a hipster; I needed to put on my thick-rimmed glasses. The new place faces right onto Main Street.

Citizen is basically a city café. You walk in, and half the joint is the bar (like a Waffle House bar, not a bar bar, where you can see them preparing your meal) and the other half is one long row of seating. We decided to grab a table since we weren’t going to sit outside. A waiter soon helped us, which is an upgrade from their old location where it was order-and-seat-yourself.

As a native of Virginia Beach, I started to hear about Citrus Breakfast & Lunch, or just Citrus, a couple of years ago. It became an even bigger deal when they opened a second location in VB. On a trip home, my friends and I tried to get a table there. The hostess promptly informed us that the wait for the table was 45 minutes to an hour.

LOL

Me: “I think we’ll go somewhere else.”

Ain’t no brunch worth that wait.

There’s a lot to love about The Daily Kitchen and Bar. They locally source ingredients, serve a plethora of vegan and vegetarian dishes, have a beautiful patio in the heart of Carytown and pretty much only employ the happiest people on earth. When I went there for dinner last time, I got a pig and fig pizza, which was not only delicious but incredibly unique.

After Cazey and I did our TV spot for Vegetarian Awareness Week, we knew the only place that would be right to brunch at would be a place with a ton of vegetarian options, so to The Daily we went. Despite the cooler temperature and my lack of a jacket, Cazey asked for a table outside anyways. It ended up being perfect because we both ordered hot coffee to warm us up from the cooler temperature.

Brunch Review: Kuba Kuba

For Cazey’s friend’s second day in Richmond, we decided to take her to an RVA favorite, Kuba Kuba. Sara and Cazey have both been to Kuba Kuba several times before. In fact, we tried going for our Valentine’s Day date, but there was a line, and neither of us honor the virtue patience, so we left.

In this case, Cazey was still worried about a wait since Kuba Kuba does not take reservations and does not have expansive seating. The restaurant is located on a nondescript corner in the heart of the Fan, only indicated by its flashing “Kuba Kuba” sign with a rooster. If you can’t tell, they specialize in Cuban food.

In lieu of our new blog name, I thought it'd be fitting to actually do some brunch-themed posts. On top of that, I've ALWAYS wanted to be a food blogger, so basically there's no way I couldn't now do brunch reviews from around Richmond. So look forward to that happening every Sunday!

Here goes nothing. Up first, we've got Pearl Raw Bar.

A bit about my relationship with Pearl: I've been there three times. The first, with my roommates. We were all hungover as hell, and the waitress treated us as such. The second time I went with my sister and a roommate. 2 out of 3 of us were not hungover, and it was my favorite Pearl experience yet. The third time I went with a group of friends and the service was on par, but not memorable.
