E-Zhard's More Like It: A Consumer Review

I live in Richmond, but am originally from Connecticut, so going home is always a pain in the ass. One action I took to try to ease the pain is getting an E-ZPass. I'm assuming everyone knows what that is, but just to be sure, it's a little white transponder that you put on your windshield and then debits money out of your account when you're driving so you don't have to deal with change and people at toll booths.

Sounds awesome and easy, right! Just like the name! But it's not!

You register the little transponder to your car and then load enough money to get you home onto it beforehand, so it should be smooth sailing. But of course it's not. When I got home to Connecticut, I got an email saying my account is in the negative.

That means I spent over $65 in tolls, one way. What the hell?

What Not to Say to Someone On a Diet

As some of you may recall, I have began a work-hosted Biggest Loser competition. It's only a little over a week into my new diet, and I've heard a myriad of statements that annoy me so frequently that I feel it is my public service to write them down for everyone as a learning opportunity. Here is what not to say to someone on a diet (or at least someone like me, or just me):

"Why? You don't have to lose weight." You're right, I don't HAVE to lose weight. No one is forcing me to. However, I am over the weight that is considered healthy. When I sit down, my roll is now protruding over my pants. My face is rounder than it used to be. I get out of breath easier than before. I want to lose weight, but yes, you are correct, I don't need to.

(Un)Lucky Ducks

Sometimes I think I'm an unlucky person, and then I reach my hand into my bag to grab my computer, and come out with a staple stuck under my nail. It's at that point that I realized I could probably remove the "I think" part of the previous sentence.

I'm the type to drop TV's on her foot. Get hit by falling mirrors. Drop my mug onto another mug so as to take a notch out of both of them.

Come to find out, it may run in the family, or so my dad said my grandma said. So maybe someone said it once at one time. And at the time it was said, I outrightly said I don't think I'm that unlucky. In the grand scheme of things, I am actually pretty lucky. My family is pretty great, I grew up in a good neighborhood, went to a great college and have been employed.

Sure, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and think that life is so difficult. And it's out to get me. And my life is harder than everyone else's.

When you think about it more though, you might just realize that your life had lots of moments that compete for most lucky moments. What are some of your luckiest moments?

The Transition

A little over six months ago, I sat down to write a one year anniversary post of the creation of Tweets and Mascara. However, I couldn't accurately articulate what it's meant to me to write a blog that (some) people actually read. My blog and I have had our ups and downs, the main down being that I didn't write anything for about a four month stretch. The whole time, I wanted to reincarnate it, but I wanted to do it right. I wanted at least three posts a week. And not just three posts a week, but three thoughtful posts a week. And I knew I would have a tough time fulfilling that promise to myself with my work commitments, gym commitments, social commitments, etc. So I recruited a part-time helper, Cazey. Originally, the plan was that I would write two posts a week and he would write one. Then I started looking for new jobs, interviewing for new jobs and having a new job. My life was in a whirlwind phase, and Cazey not only stepped up to the plate, but laid out a four-course meal.

It's not fair to say that this blog is my own anymore. In the beginning of Cazey's guest appearances, it was difficult to let the reigns go and let someone have such a presence in an outlet that was super personal and solely mine for an entire year. Not that I didn't ask him to do it (because I begged him to), but it was interesting nonetheless seeing what he came up with each week. And now I am downright excited to see what he comes up with, week after week. And, truth be told, he's contributing significantly more than me these days (hopefully I'll catch up soon).

How Music Feels

This past summer was the first time I went to multiple (well, any, actually) country concerts. These were a staple in many of my friends' lives. The huge pregame, lawn seats, cowboy boots, sundresses and airplane bottles tucked into every nook and cranny for the show. I mostly followed suit, minus the attire. And it was great! I saw Luke Bryan and questionably another artist. We were all the way in the back, so when the duet (or tri-et?) he does with Florida Georgia Line began, it was easy to convince myself that Florida Georgia Line actually showed up. Sober Sara knows they didn't, but at the time, I thought I was having a heart attack because it was the best thing that happened all day.

Where I am going with this is that country concerts are a blast. There's an expectation of alcohol, you get to be outdoors, with all your friends and in the presence of music. But they are nothing compared to an indie/alternative rock concert.

Sore Subjects Over the Holidays

I hate to be one of those people who says, "Let's not talk about it," because really, I only want to talk about it more after you say that. But here is a list of things I'd rather not discuss while reuniting with family and friends over the holidays.

Grad school. Like, OMG, number one thing people want to ask me about. I know they say grad school is supposed to break you before it does - well, whatever it's $uppo$ed to do - but I didn't know it would have me questioning what is a truly healthy amount of apathy, dissatisfaction (does that negate the apathy), and why the heck don't I just teach elementary school art???

Hillary. Yes, she's going to run. And if she's not, is the fighting worth it? Pass the pie.
