Lately, I’ve found myself on Bumble. Despite assertions that I am a happy single (which is relatively true), I also find myself seeking validation and attention like any self-involved twenty-something via a cultivated dating profile. Who thinks I’m attractive and witty? Are they also attractive and witty?

Bumble, like the majority of dating apps, revolves around swiping to others’ profiles - right if I think they’re photogenic, intelligent, and have some career trajectory; left if less than cute, ultra-conservative, or have some predisposition for puppy-eared Snapchat filter selfies. (Seriously, girls - maybe guys too - don’t do that crap.)

Picked Up at the Museum

Today I got asked for my number. As in, I think was hit on. I think.

I was at the museum trying to renew my membership when I had to explain why I deserved the student rate. She asked what I studied. I said epidemiology. (I don’t study epidemiology, but that sounds more interesting than what I do study.)

She asked if that meant I studied skin diseases.

I previously wrote a post where I mentioned I deleted all dating apps off my phone and how glorious and free I felt for finding myself in doing that. But then I got bored. My roommates went to bed. I had homework I didn’t want to do and clothes I didn’t want to fold. And I already cleaned the bathroom. So I downloaded that inane app known as Tinder.

For a few minutes, I sat on my couch swiping left, right, up, down, and diagonally. I also updated my profile to say, “Looking for someone to go to awkward pregames with where you only know the host, but haven’t seen them in four years. And other activities.” I then deleted the “And other activities” addendum because it sounded a bit too suggestive (“What are these other activities?”).

We Met On an App - But Then I Paid For More Than Apps

Senior year of high school we had to choose a topic to debate in my dual enrollment English class. I elected to debate the merits of men paying on the first date. That is, I defended why men shouldn’t pay on the first date. I cringe when I think back on my arguments, because they were rudimentary and based more on wit than wisdom (what’s new?), but I still stand by the assertion: We need to recall the age-old notion that men pay on first dates.

The rule should be either:

a.) Whoever invited you on the date pays (which can be the man then), or

b.) You split the check.

Becoming a Ghost, or the Person I Hate

I’ve become the person I hate. I ghosted on someone this week. Or I’m in the process of ghosting if we’re going to be technical. It’s only been two days. I could still save my reputation and soul. I could text back.

Let’s back up. As you know, I am an apathetic user of dating apps. I constantly match and never initiate. Or when I do start a conversation, I grow bored – or conversation is lively enough that meeting is proposed, and it happens, and they aren't Cate Blanchett/Emma Watson/Keira Knightley. To their credit, I’m also neither Drake/Bradley Cooper/Justin Bieber. So then it fades out, but it’s mutual.

Episode VII.5: May Tinder Be With You

My relationships with Star Wars and Tinder are the exact opposite. I grew up with Star Wars. I’m on Tinder because I’m all grown up. My dad introduced me to Star Wars. My dad does not know I’m on Tinder. Star Wars characters are always in my heart. Tinder characters are, well, characters.

One fretful afternoon, I considered uniting these paradoxical worlds.

It all started a short time ago in a galaxy quite nearby when my family saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens without me. Okay, okay, I was invited, but I had a friend in town and I chose friendship over starships. I figured it was cooler to sit back and let people freak out about it. I’d see it when the crowds died down, right? Right. that’s what I told myself.

Youth, Tinder, and All of the Above

I preface this post by alerting the reader to two things:

1.) I look younger than my age.

2.) I often have a sense of a humor that no one else gets. Or at least they laugh a lot less loud than I do.

On the former, I have a brother who is five and a half years younger. When I return home, the lady at our local Chinese restaurant inevitably asks, “Are you the young one or the old one?”

What Happens on Tinder Doesn't Stay on Tinder

I’m a passive participant on the dating scene. What that means is (at least by my definition), I maintain several dating profiles, but I rarely message anyone unless they’re Aphrodite incarnate. Still, I won’t deny you can find me swiping right and left late at night.

However, if someone messages me, I tend to respond. Unless you show red flags or resemble a bore.

I'm Not Impressed With Your Netflix

It's all the new rage in dating. Apparently all the guys will offer it. And I'm only assuming they offer it because girls agree to it.
