We all have those friends who we’ve known for years, but we go months without seeing one another until we think of them randomly and say, “Hey, how are you? Let’s get brunch soon!”

That’s my friend Alyssa. We’ve known each other since undergrad, and we’re both in grad school (well, she’s in dental school), but we go eternities without seeing each other - and then we get coffee.

Alyssa was supposed to drive to me in the Fan, but her car broke, so I had to make a choice: No brunch, or do I drive to her? Since I’m so selfless, I drove to her. This also changed our destination. She gave me two options: the place we didn’t go and Café Caturra.

I spent a weekend in Annapolis a few weeks ago, and I went back to Miss Shirley's Cafe, which I've reviewed already. However, this experience was a bit different. I -- gasp -- actually have a few negative things to say for once in a brunch review. I take some of the blame in this though, as most of the problem stems from my dish selection.

Anyways, we make it to Sine and their patio is empty. I mean seriously, the only person there is the friend we were meeting. We sit down and the waitress promptly comes over to get our order. I go with the dollar mimosa, because how could you not when it's a dollar. My sister goes with the trifecta: a mimosa, coffee and water. Caroline also grabs a mimosa. Walker gets water. More ammo, should he need to water the sidewalk again.

Two weekends ago my two friends visited Richmond for the Watermelon Festival. We had to brunch before the festival, so I decided to take them to Starlite. I had never been to Starlite for brunch, but I had heard good things - and they weren't lies.

Starlite is on the corner of Main and Robinson, one of the handful of restaurants on that corner, and generally has open windows onto the sidewalk. On this day, it was already high eighties by 11 am, so the windows were shut. We crowded into the AC'd front part where a hostess asked us how many. We said we had three, and she said it would be fifteen minutes, but then a table opened up and we were about to pounce - until a larger party said they needed three tables, not two.

I considered throwing a mimosa on that group, then reconsidered seeing how we were outnumbered.

There is almost nothing more exciting than getting an email about a new brunch spot, so when we got word that Castanea had brunch, it took us almost no time to head down there to try it out. I had never been to Castanea, so my first impression was the big font on the front of the building, a huge mural on the side of the building and a large patio with colorful umbrellas.

When you walk into Castanea, it looks exactly what you'd imagine for a Greek cafe, complete with a dessert counter and golden chairs. We opted to sit on the patio. As it was a sweltering mid-August day in Richmond, what could go wrong? Oh, that's right, rain. It rained on us. And you guessed it, right when we got our food was when it was hardest. But I digress.

I went to dollar drinks at Tobacco Company the night prior, so the last thing I wanted was more alcohol. But then one of our waiters said their Bloody Mary's were the best, so I caved and got one. With a lamb shank, because why not at this point, right?

I remember first seeing pictures of the rainbow bagel on social media over a year ago, maybe two years ago. It's just a bagel, but it's multiple colors and trendy and millennials have got to have it.

Parallel to this, I am not a huge bread eater, but I do like Brooklyn bagels. On my only other visit to New York, I stayed in Brooklyn and had a bagel two mornings in a row and had been salivating ever since.

So I knew when I came back to Brooklyn this summer, I'd be buying a bagel, like, every day and also three for the bus. This plan became even more enticing when my friend and hostess informed me that "the bagel store is across the street."

One of my best friends, Meredith (since she always gets peeved when I omit her names in posts that reference her), is getting married in November. We’ve known each other since kindergarten. She used to joke that I’d be one of her brides-men, but that joke came true this spring when she asked me to be part of her wedding. Mind you, she has thirteen brides-people, including two men.

The best part of all this is, of course, I was invited to her bachelorette weekend. How often does a guy get to do that?

Seventeen of us congregated on Fort Lauderdale, FL a few weekends ago. (Yes, you read right: Meredith had 17 people attend her weekend.) And, of course, since it was a bachelorette weekend, brunch had to be included. On Saturday, the Fellowship of the Bride (otherwise known as the #BrideTribe, or arguably the largest Bachelorette Party Millennials Have Ever Seen) took a multitude of Ubers to Tap 42.

In the weeks leading up to this year’s Richmond Brunch Weekend, I found myself brunching twice a week, which doesn’t sound like much of a toil until you look at my bank statement. Also, brunch is fun and all, but when you’re dragging yourself out of bed repeatedly for it…well, there is not enough iced coffee in a day.

And the saddest part of all this is (I know, such first world problems, brunching and all), I never got to all of the participating restaurants. (There were 24, so please bear with me.) Notably, the Betty on Davis and Nota Bene (formerly Pizza Tonight) both evaded my stomach.

Thankfully, I got to right one of my wrongs when I ventured to the Betty on Davis a couple of weekends ago. The Betty was top of my brunch list (along with Nota Bene; I’m coming for you next), and on a Friday night at the VMFA, I found my friends talking about it. I promptly asked if they wanted to go on Sunday.
